CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED SEEKING
VOLUNTEERS FOR CUSTODY VISITING IN DORSET
A campaign has
been launched this week by Dorset Police Authority urgently seeking
volunteers for the important role of Independent Custody
Visitor.
The role involves
visiting Custody Units at police stations in the County to check on
the welfare of people being detained. The visits are
unannounced and can take place on any day of the year and at any
time of the day or night.
Two Information Events
are being held so that people who are interested in the role can
find out more about the custody visiting scheme.
These events will enable
those attending to speak to existing custody visitors about the
role and how it fits in with their lifestyle. Both events will be
held at the Conference Centre, Police Headquarters, Winfrith on the
following dates:
- Thursday 8 April
at 2pm
- Monday 12 April at
5pm
Chairman of the Dorset’s
Custody Visiting Panel, Mrs Kathie Emery, said: “The job of a
custody visitor is essential. This is an extremely important
role that checks on the welfare of people who are being held in
custody.
“The visits provide
detainees with the opportunity to raise a concern about their
detention. The Custody Visitor will then raise the problem
with the custody officers and the problem can be solved.”
The volunteers the Police
Authority is seeking must be over 18, of good character and should
reside in Dorset. They need to be able to make informed,
unbiased observations. Applicants are welcomed from all areas
of the community, particularly young people and those from minority
ethnic groups.
